The chief engineer is excluded from overtime allowance. This is due to the nature of his position, as he is considered to be equal to the master and has the responsibility of the vessel’s engine, and also due to the high level of his income compared to the rest of the crew.

However, overtime can apply if specifically agreed. The measure of its calculation is the basic salary provided in the applicable collective agreement. A different amount can be mutually agreed to be the basis of such calculations.

NOTE: A seafarer works for eight hours a day and can work for an additional four hours, which is not considered overtime, but overwork.
