This week, it was with great humility and emotion that I accepted a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) from the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd). I am very grateful to my wife and my family for helping me to achieve this honour and thank them sincerely for their support over the years. I dedicate this meritorious medal to my family and thank them for the privilege of making life so worthwhile.
The Medal is surprisingly for two areas of service, so I feel doubly grateful and honoured – first being service to the accounting profession and second service to athletics.
Service to Accounting Profession
CPA Australia, my accounting body, has around 164,000 members, so I am greatly privileged to be one of the few honoured by my professional colleagues. The OAM process requires a nominator and support from three referees in strict privacy from the awardee and normally takes two years to process. It is with great appreciation that I thank my colleagues who felt I deserved this nomination and recognition.
As CEO I feel very grateful for the opportunity to be a founder of our family business. Our staff and clients are our most important asset and I thank them sincerely for their trust and loyalty. Thank you again to my colleagues in the accounting profession for the recognition and whose friendship I always enjoy and to whom I owe so much. Thank you.
Service to Athletics
I suspect this OAM service to athletics award emanated from my role as Joint Race Director of the Brisbane Marathon for seven years. Our family jointly designed marathon courses around the city of Brisbane (closing roads and annoying motorists) and even an ultra-marathon from Gold Coast to Brisbane called the Lest We Forget Run to remember those who served in the wars. We partnered with the RSL and raised money for Legacy War Widows.
A big thank you to all in the athletic community for recognizing me in this way and who inspire me to keep active.
I would like to again thank the Governor-General as well as my colleagues who nominated me for this honour. It has been my absolute privilege to accept the OAM award and I do so with humility. Thank you to family, friends and everyone.
