Bona Law announced on October 12th that Steven Levitsky agreed to leave DLA Piper to open and lead Bona Law’s New York office. He brings over three decades of experience as an antitrust and compliance lawyer at major international law firms, including Shea & Gould, LeBoeuf Lamb, and Dewey & LeBoeuf. Levitsky was in charge of the antitrust M&A groups at Shea & Gould and LeBoeuf Lamb.

Levitsky commented on the dramatic change going on in the legal market. “Companies always want top quality legal work. But what’s changing is that, today, savvy GCs know they can get it from smaller specialized boutique firms that have great people and great service, but none of the massive overhead that large firms carry and must charge for. Boutiques deliver top quality, personalized service, and greater value. ”

During Levitsky’s three decades of antitrust practice at some of the biggest law firms in the world, he worked for Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 companies. His work involved managing the antitrust side of (1) complex, large-scale merger transactions; (2) domestic and international joint ventures; and (3) creating antitrust compliance and audit programs, including pricing and distribution issues. He has handled contested mergers in over 50 industries, many of them worth over $10 billion each. His experience includes extensive global-merger work, including one case that involved supervising antitrust clearances across 75 international jurisdictions. And he represented litigants in major antitrust litigation, including defense of multi-district litigation in federal court.

Levitsky has been named an antitrust Super Lawyer every year since 2002. He has written three books and more than 75 articles; won numerous writing awards; been extensively published in peer-reviewed journals; and has spoken at international antitrust and FCPA conferences all over the world. He is currently editing the forthcoming Global Merger Clearance Handbook, which will cover antitrust merger clearance practices in 60 jurisdictions.

Bona Law also announced the opening of a New York office on October 12th, which Levitsky will manage.

“Bona Law was built upon the idea that legal markets are changing and the big law firm model hasn’t changed with it,” said Jarod Bona, principal of Bona Law. “Our vision is to provide clients with greater value and more flexibility for all of their antitrust and competition matters, and our addition of a New York office and Steve Levitsky’s invaluable talent is a huge step toward achieving that.”

Besides adding his depth of experience in antitrust litigation and counseling, Levitsky will build Bona Law’s antitrust merger & acquisitions practice, which will be based in New York. Bona explained that “Today, clients have a real strategic choice when it comes to antitrust counseling and litigation. Companies faced either with routine Hart-Scott-Rodino (HSR) filings or the more substantial threat of merger clearance battles with the Federal Trade Commission or the Department of Justice no longer are dependent on big law. Antitrust boutiques offer clients the same quality, the same bench depth, and the same experience of biglaw antitrust departments. Only, boutiques do it more efficiently, more economically, and with greater personal attention and responsiveness to clients’ needs.”
