Show more +Sergio works with international and domestic businesses to develop worldwide filing strategies. Sergio received his Foreign Service and Trade Certification in Chile followed by his Bachelor of Science in Political Science at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He began his career with the Chilean Diplomatic Service and Chilean governmental trade delegation services which took him around the world. He has held positions in the Chilean Diplomatic Services including at the Chilean Consulate General at Los Angeles (as Chancellor and Honorary Adjunct Consul).
Sergio’s interests and qualifications in acquiring IP rights began forming while he was working with CORFO's Head Officer in the mid 1970s, based in Santiago and exploring markets and trade agreements worldwide. It was there that he honed his skills in patent and trademark prosecution, attaining his paralegal certification in the US and specialized IP and trade courses in Geneva. Due to family requirements, Sergio concentrated his work with nationally prominent U.S. firms, primarily in Los Angeles, where he has managed and administered international filings for large and complex patent portfolios in a wide range of technologies. The clients were major Pharmaceutical, Energy and Mining firms and several Latin American governments. Through the IP work he performed for these large corporations, Sergio developed key relationships with many Foreign Offices. Through these relationships both he and Accel have successfully secured high quality international patent protection.
With his proactive “No-Nonsense” approach to getting things “Done Right”, Sergio is a hands-on type of guy, all about business. He personally executes plans to acquire patent and trademark rights globally. For over two decades Sergio has been receiving hand-offs from attorneys and agents alike to do much more than simply perform an administrative function – he creates customized country level IP protection strategies aligned with the client’s business plans. To this end, Sergio proactively works closely with referring counsel to create streamlined protection plans focused on the most important country level markets. He then navigates through the complexities of foreign offices to meet the goals of the clients. Sergio consistently wins the confidence of new clients because he brings the unique combination of trusted relationships among many foreign agents and his know how of foreign practice and procedures. Execution of every filing program is based on a customized team of known entities. Clients quickly recognize that the required IP investment is being optimally applied to acquire meaningful and cost effective market protection.
To summarize, Sergio takes a holistic approach by proactively planning the protection program and then performing administrative functions of budgeting complex processes while simultaneously managing foreign prosecution activities in multiple countries.
Sergio continues to provide consulting services to governmental agencies in Chile on IP matters, trade issues and financing opportunities. He is an active member of INTA (the International Trademark Association), ASIPI (Inter American Association for Intellectual Property), AIPPI (International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property), and other associations involved in worldwide intellectual property matters.
Among Sergio’s many assets are his business acumen and his global relationships with potential partners and investors having strong interests in technology innovations. Not-withstanding his activities relating to business development and forming IP partnerships, Sergio manages to maintain a well-balanced lifestyle. When not traveling he is spending much time with his spouse and each of his four, four-legged children and other close family members in Los Angeles.
