B+F senior partner Gabriel Bustamante handles administrative, business and regulatory matters.
As head of Bustamante + Freyre, his areas of expertise include: electricity; oil and gas; industry; infrastructure projects; tourism developments; and equator principles. Over the past 15 years he has taken an active hand in significant development projects in Mexico, valued together at more than $65 billion. He has been the leading advocate in renewable energy projects of more than 9,000MW; gas transportation projects of over 5,000km; oil and gas exploration and production activities; liquefaction, storage and transloading facilities; numerous combined-cycle power plants; cogenerations; transmission lines; and distribution networks. He is a top practitioner on environmental and social impact assessment, with more than 600 approvals.
Mr Bustamante also has experience in working with national and international NGOs; and federal, state and local governments. He has participated in drafting model rules on environmental issues for indigenous Mexican communities, whose legal regimes are based largely on custom; and he has handled several indigenous consultations and public hearings across the country.
Mr Bustamante received his law degree from the Ibero-American University (UIA), where he graduated with honours. He also has a master’s degree in environmental law and public policy, with special mention, from the Center for Environmental Research and Learning (now part of the Universidad del Medio Ambiente).
