Fahrul S. Yusuf graduated in 2003 from the University of Indonesia Faculty of Law and earned his Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the University of Chicago in 2010. In June 2008, he participated in the 45th session of the Academy of American and International Law in Dallas, Texas.
Since joining SSEK in July 2002, Fahrul has been heavily involved in helping clients establish corporations and with foreign investment deals, mergers and acquisitions, and various restructurings. Aside from general corporate and commercial matters, much of his work is related to securities, debt restructuring, and antitrust matters.
His projects have included acting as Indonesian counsel to Alibaba Group in its US$1 billion purchase of a controlling stake in Southeast Asian online retailer Lazada Group, advising Grab Inc. on the acquisition of Uber’s business and assets in Indonesia and representing Didi Chuxing as Indonesian counsel in the acquisition of a substantial stake in Grab Inc. in a transaction valued at over US$1 billion.
Fahrul advised Woori Bank of South Korea in the purchase of a 33% stake in Bank Saudara of Indonesia and represented China Construction Bank in the acquisition of Bank Windu and the merger with Bank Anda, a transaction valued at approximately US$100 million. He served as Indonesian counsel to Shinhan Investment Corporation, a South Korean securities company, in acquiring 99% of shares in Indonesian securities company PT Makinta Securities and advised a large Middle Eastern reinsurance company looking to enter the Indonesian market through the acquisition of an Indonesian reinsurance company.
Fahrul is recognized by IFLR1000 as one of Indonesia’s leading lawyers for banking, capital markets, M&A, restructuring and insolvency. He was named Young Lawyer of the Year at the Asian Legal Business 2016 Indonesia Law Awards.
Fahrul has been a member of the Indonesian Advocates Association (Peradi) since August 2007, allowing him bar admittance in all judicial courts in Indonesia, and has been registered with the Capital Market and Financial Institutions Supervisory Board (Bapepam-LK, now the Financial Services Authority, or OJK) as a securities attorney since December 2007.
